The stuff that matters in life, I'm only now beginning to learn, is what happens between the ticking of the clock and the hype. There is just so much a person can do before the things a person does overcome the person himself. Let me explain...
The book of life, is long and boring. The ones we know often hurt us the most. And when it's all said and done, there are very few moments in each day that are held in memory over a lifetime. You see, the clock is ticking like a panting dog. What we do with this very moment helps define us in a very real way, for the rest of our lives.
What we chose not to do, helps define us just as much.
Can you remember being young and lying down on a driveway, in a setting summer night? Remember the sense of wonder you had in the clouds and in the measure of wind that seemed to pull them in time and in rhythm like a classical symphony.
Ahh, to be finite and swallowed by the moving atmosphere of the universe and body parts as they scatter from here to there. To be created. To be wonderful in design. And to know a sense of joy that transcends the rational.
But as we age, something happens inside, that scatters that wonder aside. Our hearts harden. And turn to us for survival. And instead of spending our days in awe-struck wonder, we instead set our hope on just making it through the week. Suddenly, as if we wake up in a dream and are changed completely, a Friday is just about as nice as heaven. In many cases, the end of the work week is all we know about heaven. It's all we can accept from a cruel world--a break from routine. A chance to sleep in. To take a sip, before going back to the same struggle on Monday.
How did we get here? When did growing up become synonymous with giving up a sense of wonder? Why is it that becoming a mature person often kills the joy we held in our childhood? Our evolved culture sucks and plucks our sense of wonder. And in turn, gives us a sense of reason that holds to the evolution of things. Things change. And hope is an old man wishing he could redo his youth.
But we don't have to be that way. There is nothing written in your life story that mandates, dictates, or demands for you to fall in line, to count the cost, and take up the burden of living the dream. Nobody said happiness in this life requires you to kill off your passion.
What really matters is breathing. That's it. Of course, that's a great understatement. But I'm trying to make a point. And the point is this: that despite what you have heard or told yourself, there isn't anything you can really do or achieve or accomplish that could fill the wonder-hole that has been left void sense your youth.
All you can do, is breathe. Lie down on the hard concrete. Feel how the summer heat seeps up into your body. And watch the clouds roll over the atmosphere. That is life. To be able to appreciate the things we already have, that are truly gifts from an amazing and wonderful creator.
I challenge you to do just that, today. Quit what you're doing. If you feel like your neighbors would judge you as a crazy person if you laid down on your driveway, then just take a shower. And watch the water flow from the spout. Feel it hit your head and roll down your face. Notice, all the while, that your heart is beating. And that you are breathing. And that you can feel the warm water on your heart and on your toes, that hurt from the long journey.
Remember, that these things, this ability to realize we are alive, is what separates us from the creatures of the sky, and the things on land, and the fish of the sea. We are truly unique in this world. And in that way, each of us is divine.
You were created in a fearful and wonderful way. And the father is furious in his love to you. Isn't it time we took the time to simply enjoy ourselves as a fantastic and amazing creation?
If you can enjoy a shower as a human, not a machine, as a person aware of yourself in this way, and not just a cog in the wheel, you are on the step to being able to live in the moment, and to being happy in the presence of a loving and powerful creator, who has given his creation life, knowledge, a brain--but much more...he has ultimately given us himself.
Go in peace...
